How it works

Pace is time divided by distance. For longer races, the Riegel model adjusts for fatigue.

The math

Pace is minutes per kilometer. Riegel uses an exponent of 1.06 to predict longer distances.

T1 is baseline time for distance D1, T2 is target predicted time for distance D2. Energy burn averages ~1 kcal per kilogram per kilometer for runners.

Examples

Example: 10km Run in 50 Minutes

  1. Distance: 10 km, Time: 50 minutes (3,000 seconds)
  2. Pace calculation: 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km (5:00 min/km)
  3. Speed calculation: 60 ÷ 5.00 = 12.0 km/h
  4. Predicted Half Marathon finish (21.0975 km): 50 × (21.0975 ÷ 10)^1.06 = 1h 50m 42s
  5. Calories burned for 70 kg runner: 70 × 10 × 1.036 = 725 kcal.
