The calculator applies risk equations derived from large cohort studies, most notably the Framingham Heart Study. Each risk factor, age, sex, systolic blood pressure, total and HDL cholesterol, smoking status, diabetes, and blood pressure medication, contributes to the probability of a cardiovascular event in the next 10 years. The heart age is the age at which the general population would carry the same computed risk.

The math

The inputs are converted into a risk score using a simplified Framingham-style risk model. The 10-year risk is compared with a reference table of average risk by age and sex; the reference age with the matching risk becomes the heart age. A result above your chronological age indicates elevated cardiovascular risk.
