Break-Even Point Calculator

Fixed costs, price and variable cost per unit — find how many units you must sell before profit starts, and what revenue that means.

FormulasVerified source
Units = Fixed / (Price - Variable) | Revenue = Units × Price

Divide fixed by per-unit contribution, multiply by price for turnover needed.

Break-even: units and revenue to cover costs

Fixed costs do not move, variable costs rise with each unit, price is what you charge. Break-even is where contribution per unit pays off the fixed block. Beyond it you profit.

TL;DR

  • Contribution = Price - Variable Cost
  • Formulas: Units = Fixed / (Price - Variable) | Revenue = Units × Price
  • 12k fixed 25/15

How it works

Contribution = Price - Variable Cost. Units = Fixed Costs / Contribution. Revenue = Units × Price. If variable ≥ price, you never break even.

The math

12000 fixed, price 25, variable 15 → contribution 10 → 1200 units → 30000 revenue.

Divide fixed by per-unit contribution, multiply by price for turnover needed.

Examples

12k fixed 25/15

  1. Contribution 10
  2. Units 1200
  3. Revenue 30k

5k fixed 49/30

  1. Contribution 19
  2. Units 264
  3. Revenue 12,936

When to use it

Pricing

Test price points vs volume.

Planning

Set sales targets.

⚠ Common mistakes

  • Forgetting variable costs
  • Mixing monthly/yearly periods

FAQ (6)

What if variable cost exceeds price?

Then contribution is negative — you lose on every sale and never break even. Raise price or cut variable cost.

Break-even vs profit target?

Add desired profit to fixed costs and divide by contribution to get units for that profit.
