Pace is calculated by dividing total running time by distance covered. To predict race finish times across different distances (e.g. 5K performance predicting a Marathon time), sports scientists rely on Peter Riegel's endurance model, which accounts for natural fatigue factors over extended efforts.
Matematiksel Analiz ve Formüller
Pace converts total duration into minutes per unit of distance. Riegel's formula applies an empirical exponent of 1.06 to account for speed decay over longer distances.
T1 is baseline time for distance D1, T2 is target predicted time for distance D2. Energy burn averages ~1 kcal per kilogram per kilometer for runners.
Uygulamalı Örnekler
Example: 10km Run in 50 Minutes
- Distance: 10 km, Time: 50 minutes (3,000 seconds)
- Pace calculation: 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km (5:00 min/km)
- Speed calculation: 60 ÷ 5.00 = 12.0 km/h
- Predicted Half Marathon finish (21.0975 km): 50 × (21.0975 ÷ 10)^1.06 = 1h 50m 42s
- Calories burned for 70 kg runner: 70 × 10 × 1.036 = 725 kcal.
Kullanım Alanları
✦ Pacing Strategy for Race Day
Avoid blowing up in early kilometers by maintaining target minute-per-kilometer splits.
✦ Structured Interval & Tempo Training
Determine exact target speeds for threshold intervals, tempo runs, and easy recovery jogs.
✦ Race Completion Projections
Forecast finish times for 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and Full Marathon events accurately.
⚠ Sık Yapılan Hatalar
- Starting Too Fast: Running the first kilometer 20 seconds faster than planned exhausts glycogen stores prematurely.
- Overestimating Long-Distance Predictions: Race time predictors assume you have trained adequately for the longer distance.
Sıkça Sorulan Sorular (SSS)
Q: What is split pacing?
Split pacing means tracking your time for individual kilometers or miles during a run.
Q: What is negative splitting?
Negative splitting means running the second half of a race faster than the first half, a proven strategy for personal records.
